Ben’s Place

Set atop a gently sloping hill in rural North Carolina, Ben’s Place was designed as a lasting home for a couple entering retirement. The project reinterprets the familiar language of the farmhouse through a modern lens, balancing simplicity, durability, and comfort with a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.

The home’s layout was carefully developed to support aging in place. A primary owner’s suite on the main level allows the couple to live comfortably on one floor over time, while additional spaces provide flexibility for visiting family and evolving needs. Generous porches—including a screened weather porch—extend the living areas outdoors, offering shaded spaces to enjoy the views and seasonal changes that define rural life.

Material selections emphasize longevity and low maintenance, allowing the home to stand up to the demands of a rural environment while aging gracefully over time. A detached garage with a guest suite above adds additional flexibility to the property, accommodating visiting family while maintaining privacy for both hosts and guests.

Designed with both present and future in mind, Ben’s Place reflects the core philosophy of thoughtful residential architecture: creating homes that support the lives of their owners today while remaining adaptable for the years ahead.
